The Illawarra Shoalhaven Health Education Centre (ISHEC) officially opened in 2013. The facility is located opposite Wollongong Hospital and has training rooms and simulation laboratories that can be hired by individuals, students, community and business organisations. It is a perfect venue for meetings, and education and training programs, accommodating small groups of up to 30 people.
The Commonwealth Government’s Innovative Clinical Teaching and Training Grants Program has provided the capital funding for the development of the Illawarra Shoalhaven Health Education Centre (ISHEC) located adjacent to the Wollongong Hospital at 42 Loftus Street Wollongong.
ISHEC is designed to increase capacity and improve distribution of clinical teaching and training for students, trainees and health professionals for continuing professional development within the Illawarra Shoalhaven region.
This new purpose built facility will service the existing health professional community of the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) and will support increases in clinical training placements through the provision of teaching and training to students whilst on hospital placements.

July 2013 - Still unpacking boxes and sorting through minor teething issues, however, the Centre has seen an increase in the usage of training rooms and accommodation since opening.
June 2013 - It’s official!
ISHEC was officially opened by Minister for Higher Education and Skills,
Sharon Bird MP
and Stephen Jones MP
on Tuesday 11 June 2013.
May 2013 – Centre opened its doors on 6 May 2013.
April 2013 – Project completed.
What is the Illawarra Shoalhaven Health Education Centre project?
The Illawarra Shoalhaven Health Education Centre (ISHEC) project is designed to increase capacity and improve distribution of clinical teaching and training for students, trainees and qualified health professionals for continuing professional development within the Illawarra Shoalhaven Region.
The project will include the following:
- the demolition of an existing 100 sq m. dwelling and site clearance of vegetation as to enable a construction platform at 42 Loftus Street and
- the construction and commissioning of a two storey building with basement car parking to accommodate teaching, training and accommodation facilities in a purpose-built state of the art building with extensive audiovisual capacity.
When will it be built?
Project was completed in April 2013 with occupation occurring on the 6 May 2013.
Where is it being built?
At 42 Loftus Street adjacent to Wollongong Hospital.
Who is running the project?
The project principal is Health Infrastructure, principal consultant architect is Hassell Architecture and Project Management by Johnstaff Projects.
How will the community benefit from this project?
This new facility will service the existing health professional community of the ISLHD and will support increases in clinical training placements.
What about staff?
The service will provide increased access to teaching and training through enhanced simulation and clinical skills resources for staff and students within the ISLHD.
How will people know what is happening as the project progresses?
ISLHD Website and Intranet site, staff newsletters, emails and staff open forums. Numerous tours of the Centre have already been undertaken.
