Renal Wollongong (Ward C8 East)

Overview

The Renal Ward (C8 East) provides treatment for patients at any stage of kidney disease. The staff on C8 East are committed to providing the highest quality of care while helping patients manage their condition. The Renal Ward (C8 East) has 27 beds and facilities for haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. This includes a wide range of services for patients and families.

Diet and Fluid Restrictions

Compliance with diet and fluid restriction is vitally important for patients' with kidney disease. Patients and visitors are asked to seek advice from staff before bringing in any food or drinks. Following a specialised diet is often part of the treatment of chronic kidney disease. Kidney disease diets are individualised depending on the stage of kidney disease. A kidney diet consists of increasing dietary proteins, as well as lowering the intake of phosphate, potassium and sodium.

Preventing Infection

To prevent infection being introduced to patients, it is important for visitors to wash their hands when entering and exiting patient's rooms. Visitors are kindly reminded to wash their hands, not to sit on patients beds and to keep visitor numbers down to two people per patient when possible.

It is also now policy that no soap or shampoo be brought in from home. The ward supplies soap designed to reduce the spread of infection. This soap is hypoallergenic; therefore there is minimal possibility of an allergic reaction.
