Shoalhaven Cancer Care Centre – Haematology Specialist Appointments

Overview

Clinical Haematology specialises in the diagnosis and management of malignant haematological disorders including leukaemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, myeloproliferative neoplasms and myelodysplastic syndromes as well as non-malignant disorders.  We have a very active Clinical Trials Unit providing access to new cancer treatments for patients.

The ISLHD Haematology service treats all aspects of benign and malignant haematological disorders, providing multi-disciplinary inpatient and outpatient care including autologous stem cell transplantation.  Patients requiring allogeneic stem cell/bone marrow transplantation are referred to an appropriate allogeneic transplant centre in Sydney.  Paediatric haematology inpatients under the age of 15 are cared for by an appropriate children’s hospital.  Pre-allogeneic transplant care and diagnostic evaluation as well as post-transplant care is conducted locally in consultation with the allogeneic transplant unit. Adolescents aged 15-18 are managed locally with advice from the state-wide Adolescent and Young Adult Network.

Shoalhaven Cancer Care Centre services

Specialist appointments for Haematology patients are triaged (through our office at Wollongong Hospital), meaning the most urgent patients are prioritised. Referrers are kindly requested to email or fax referrals (with results of relevant investigations) to our office, and within a couple of days we will contact the patient with an appointment.

In some instances we may elect to contact referrers direct with advice on how the patient may be managed without the need for specialist review.

We have a 24-hour/7-day phone consultation service for medical staff to provide urgent advice or inpatient/outpatient consultations.
