School work experience

Supporting and encouraging the future generation of healthcare professionals is something we are passionate about at Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD). We offer a range of different work experience opportunities to help educate and empower students in their health career journeys.

Work experience programs

Our Careers in Health: A School Work Experience Program is a 3-day program that offers high school students the opportunity to gain a better understanding of clinical and non-clinical roles in NSW Health. The program runs over 3 consecutive Fridays, from 9am – 3pm, and consists of workshops and ward/site visits.

Who can apply?

Students meeting the following criteria are encouraged to apply for our 3-day Careers in Health: A School Work Experience Program:

  • high school students who either live or attend school within the Shoalhaven Local Health District
  • currently in year 10 to 12
  • interested in a career in health

Before you apply

Please be aware of the following prior to applying:

  • Only students attending school and/or residing in the Shoalhaven Local Health District are eligible to participate. This includes the Shoalhaven Heads through to Ulladulla local government areas.
  • Applications received from outside of the Local Health District will not be considered and will not receive a response from the Committee.
  • Completion of the application form does not guarantee a place in the program.
  • This application will be reviewed by the Committee.
  • All correspondence will be conducted through School Careers Advisors, Aboriginal Education Officer or School Principals.
  • Places are strictly limited. Students who are not successful will need to re-apply for subsequent programs.
  • Successful applicants will be required to:
    • obtain consent from their parent or guardian
    • complete the Careers in Health: A School Work Experience Program attendance form, including media and image consent, medical management plan (if applicable) as well as a permission for long-term follow-up.
    • COVID Vaccination (2 doses)
    • sign the Student Agreement form
    • complete the Student Placement Record, as required by the school

Applications for the 2024 program are open from 11 April for the following sessions:

  • Shoalhaven Hospital: Friday 21 June, Friday 28 June and Friday 5 July

Are you a student or careers advisor?

Do you have students who have a genuine interest in learning about a career in health?

Ad hoc work experience at Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District can be arranged by submitting this form. Types of work experience available will vary from site to site, and will depend on availability within departments.

Criteria for work experience participants

  • Fully vaccinated for COVID-19
  • Covered by their own insurance (Note: school students are covered by their school's insurance)
  • Willing to adhere to the ISLHD Code of Conduct
  • Willing to adhere to the ISLHD Confidentiality Agreement
  • Have a genuine interested in learning about a career in health.
  • To work around patients, or infectious material, surfaces or equipment participants must also be vaccinated for the following:
    • Measles
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B
    • Varicella (Chickenpox)
    • Diptheria
    • Tetanus
    • Note: these vaccinations are also recommended for those participants not working in clinical areas, with no direct physical contact with patients.
