Dr Sam Stevens is a Staff Specialist Medical Oncologist with ISLHD Cancer Services working across Wollongong and Shoalhaven.  He is a clinician-researcher who cares for people with cancer, with a particular interest in breast and gastrointestinal cancers.

Sam is a health services researcher with a current academic appointment as a Clinical Senior Lecturer and doctoral researcher at the University of Sydney.  His PhD research focuses on treatment-related time burdens ("time toxicity") and their influence on decision-making for people living with advanced cancer.

More broadly, Sam's research aims to improved shared decision-making and the patient-centred cancer care delivery.  He also has an interest in cancer medicines policy and is an active member of the Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee Economic Subcommittee.

In 2026, Sam completed a cancer policy research fellowship with Common Sense Oncology at Queen's University in Canada, supervised by Professor Chris Booth.  His research has been published in leading oncology journals, including the Journal of Clinical Oncology, The Lancet Oncology and Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology.

Sam is committed to providing compassionate, evidence-based cancer care and improving access to high-quality oncology care for patients across the Illawarra and Shoalhaven.

Outside work, Sam enjoys spending time with his young family, learning French, and exploring the beaches, bushwalks and outdoor lifestyle of the Illawarra.
