General Medicine Shoalhaven

The Department of Medicine at Shoalhaven Hospital runs on a model of General Medicine with supervision provided by 10 physicians supported by the medical ward nurses, allied health care workers, registrars and junior medical officers. The physician on call for general medicine cares for patients admitted through the emergency department. Outpatients are seen in a variety of clinics at the hospital and also in the rooms of visiting medical officers.

The various physicians at Shoalhaven Hospital also have subspecialty expertise in cardiology, respiratory medicine, gastroenterology, endocrinology and infectious diseases. We are able to provide services such as exercise stress testing, echocardiography (transthoracic and transoesophageal), bronchoscopy, gastroscopy/colonoscopy, obstetric medicine and antimicrobial stewardship amongst a number of other subspecialist services.

Training is provided for medical students from the University of Wollongong, junior medical officers, basic physician trainees and advance trainees in general medicine.
