Overview

What the service is

The Child and Family Speech Pathology team provide centre based/telehealth assessment and therapy for children with communication needs. Our therapy service is short term/time limited and is provided in partnership with families. 

What we do

Speech Pathologists manage patients with communication and feeding difficulties across the lifespan. ISLHD Speech Pathology provide services in inpatient, outpatient, and community settings across the Illawarra and Shoalhaven. 

When to access this service 

  • If you are concerned that your child is slow to talk 
  • If your child is having difficulty using words or sentences 
  • If your child is having difficulties understanding words, sentences, questions or instructions
  • If your child is difficult to understand 
  • If your child is not fluent when talking

Early intervention is important and we have a waiting list. Refer as soon as you become concerned. Western NSW Local Health District has developed a 'Waiting for Speech Pathology' website where you can find more information. 

How to access this service

We accept referrals from families, educators, or healthcare professionals.

How to get there, including by public transport

Driving is recommended as public transport to the hospital is limited. Bus services to the hospital run from Wollongong and Port Kembla train stations. There is also a bus service from Warrawong Plaza. Please refer to local bus timetables for available routes.

Car parking

There is limited parking on the hospital grounds. Timed and non-timed street parking is available. We encourage families to allow additional time for parking when accessing the service.

Disability parking spots are located at various entrances to the hospital. There is lift access to Level 3 where the Child and Family Service is located.

Hogg
Head of Discipline - Speech Pathology

Sue-Ellen Hogg is the Head of Discipline for Speech Pathology. She brings 17 years’ experience in speech pathology, working across a variety of acute, subacute and community settings. Sue-Ellen is passionate about improving services for patients and their families and has extensive experience leading both speech pathology and multidisciplinary services within the ISLHD and other Health Districts.

The speech pathology team provide services for children and adults with communication and/or swallowing/feeding difficulties across the lifespan. Services are provided in hospitals, community health centres and in the home environment. Sue-Ellen also provides leadership and governance for the ISLHD Audiology services. The audiology team provide hearing services to adults and children across the Illawarra and Shoalhaven.
