Organ & Tissue Donation Service

Overview

Organ and tissue donation saves lives – one donor can save the lives of up to 10 people and improve the lives of many more.

Each year the lives of thousands of Australians are transformed through organ and tissue transplants however more donors are needed for the 1,400 Australians on transplant waiting lists at any one time.

Organ donation is a life-saving and life-transforming medical process. Organ and tissue donation involves removing organs and tissues from someone who has died (a donor) and transplanting them into someone who, in many cases, is very ill or dying (a recipient).

It's important to...

NSW residents are encouraged to discover the facts about organ and tissue donation and register their donation decision on the Australian Organ Donor Register. It's also important to share your decision with loved ones. This is because they will be asked to confirm you wanted to be a donor before donation can proceed. The most important thing for families is knowing what their loved one wanted.
