Who we are

Paediatric inpatient services are part of Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District. We provide care for children from birth to age 16.

Paediatric inpatient service include:

  • Paediatric Assessment Unit at Wollongong Hospital
  • Paediatric Inpatient Units at Shoalhaven Hospital and Wollongong Hospital

What we do

Paediatric Assessment Unit (located in the Paediatric Inpatient Unit)

The Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU) accepts children with an acute illness who are referred by the Wollongong Hospital Emergency Department or the Paediatric inpatient unit. 

The PAU nurses and doctors will review the assessment and provide treatment. This can include:

  • treatment support
  • access to specialist care
  • medications and fluids
  • observation and follow up

Paediatric Inpatient Unit

Our Paediatricians provide care for infants, children and adolescents up to 16 years of age. If your child is 16 years and above, but still at school, they be admitted to the Paediatric inpatients service by an adult medical specialist or surgeon. 

There are two paediatric inpatient units: Shoalhaven Hospital and Wollongong Hospital.

How to get help

To access services at the Paediatric Assessment Unit, you need a referral from the Wollongong Emergency Department or the Paediatric Inpatient Unit.

Services at the Paediatric Inpatient Unit are accessed through:

  • Hospital emergency departments
  • Referral from your local healthcare centre or professional
