What we do 

The Illawarra Shoalhaven Sexual Health Service is a specialist HIV and Sexual Health Service.  

Our services include: 

  • Testing & treatment of sexually transmissible infections including HIV 

  • HIV specialist management 

  • Hepatitis B and C management 

  • Pre Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for people at high risk of exposure to HIV 

  • Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) for people after high risk of exposure to HIV (within 72 hours) 

  • DoxyPEP advice 

  • Support and advice for health care workers and GPs 

  • Research and clinical trials 

  • Sexual health counselling and support 

  • Free vaccines for priority populations  

 

Who should access this service? 

We deliver free, confidential services to priority populations: 

  • Men who have sex with men 

  • People living with HIV 

  • People with symptoms of an STI  

  • People who are contacts of a person with an STI 

  • Sex workers 

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People 

  • Gender diverse people 

  • People who inject drugs 

  • Young people at risk 

  • People with a doctor’s referral 

If you do not belong to one of these groups, your GP might be able to help.

Do I need an appointment? 

Yes, we are appointment only. Please contact the clinic for an appointment on (02) 4223 8457. 

 

Clinic locations 

  • Port Kembla Hospital - Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm 

  • Shoalhaven Hospital - Mondays and Thursdays only, 9am to 4pm 

  • Wollongong Community Health Centre - fortnightly Tuesdays by appointment only, no walk-in service available 

 

Do I need a Medicare Card? 

No, we will see people without a medicare card free of charge under certain circumstances. Please call (02) 4223 8457 to enquire.

Advice and support  

We are happy to provide live telephone advice to GPs on a range of topics, not limited to:  

  • HIV management  

  • Interpreting results (e.g. syphilis) 

  • Transgender health care (for people aged 25+) 

  • Genital dermatology 

  • Treatment decision making  

  • Treatment resistance 

  • Long acting contraception (Implanon/IUD) 

  • Medical abortion (MTOP)

Sexual Health Info Link SHIL is a specialist support line providing evidence-based support to health professionals, staffed 9am-7pm Monday to Friday
