Join Caddyshack Project as we host Dr Joy Townsend, a Sociologist whose area of expertise is in the field of gender and sexualities. Her work centres on the lived experiences of young Australians. Joy founded Learning Consent to bridge the gap between the research and evidence base for teaching sexuality education effectively, and what was happening in the classroom.

Joy is one of Australia’s leading researchers and educators on sexual consent. Her research portfolio is focussed in the area of critical sexuality studies and includes a number of empirical qualitative studies with young Australians on sensitive and complex topics. Joy completed her doctorate at UNSW in 2019. It was a qualitative research project based on in-depth interviews with Australian young people. The study brings the lived experiences of young people into dialogue with existing theoretical arguments concerning agency.

Joy speaks and writes extensively on complex issues such as sexual consent, pornography, sex education, pleasure and agency.

Join Caddyshack Project as we host Chris Cheers, a psychologist and educator based in Melbourne, Australia. He is passionate about creating accessible, accepting and safe spaces where people become empowered to reach their life goals. Through extensive training and lived experience, Chris has also developed an expertise in providing individual psychology services and workshops to artists and creatives, and the LGBTIQ+ community.

Before training as a psychologist, Chris worked for arts organisations across Australia, developing a rich understanding of the industry and a rich network of relationships with artists and arts workers. Chris brings this experience and understanding to providing specialised mental health care to clients who work in acting, music, dance, other arts workers and workers in creatives industries.

Ruiqi is bilingual in Mandarin and English as they grew up in China bringing a lot of cross cultural knowledge. Ruiqi has a Masters in Sexual Health from the University of Sydney and is passionate about this area of work and in particular sexual & reproductive health information for the Culturally & Linguistically Diverse community.

Join Caddyshack Project as we host Maggie Smith, a Clinical Nurse Consultant  at the The Albion Centre in Sydney where she started the trans clinic T150 at the centre. T150 is an innovative specialist HIV and Sexual Health Service providing holistic care for the transgender and gender diverse (TGD) community in a dedicated clinical space. Maggie is the co-coordinator of a network of nurses working in trans health and we are delighted to be able to share her knowledge on all things trans health.

Join Caddyshack Project as we host Eliza Basheer the Health Promotion Manager from the NSW Health STI Programs Unit (STIPU) as we talk about a comprehensive national sexual & reproductive health education curriculum for schools. Eliza (She/ Her) is a passionate youth reproductive and sexual health advocate with a keen interest in community consultation, healthy public policy and youth engagement. Eliza is also an avid hockey player, sports coach and volunteer tutor. Prior to her current role at STIPU, Eliza worked at Family Planning NSW for four years and has a Masters of Public Health.

Because You Care-Online Learning Module

This free online training is for foster carers, those working in the OOHC sector, and those with an interest in trauma informed sexual health conversations. The development of Because you care involved extensive consultation with key agencies in both the trauma and out of home care sectors.

The training takes approximately 90mins to complete and is made up of 3 modules which are self-paced and can be completed either all together or separately. Topics covered include: sexually transmitted infections, trauma informed care, contraception and conversation starters. At the completion of the 3 modules, you will receive a certificate of participation.

Because you care was developed by Yfoundations in partnership with the Play Safe Programs Out of Home Care working group.

Doin it Right-Online Learning Module

The Aboriginal Health & Medical Research Council (AHMRC) has created a new online program, Doin it Right', which explores issues related to sexual health. The online program was created as a tool to educate workers around sexual health topics including sexuality, gender, reproductive systems, self-esteem, STI’s, healthy relationships and pregnancy in the Indigenous community. The program was created to address the gap in sexual health education for Indigenous Youth and aims to equip Aboriginal Health Workers & other Professionals with the resources needed to communicate around these complex issues.

Hepatitis B Online Learning Module

Hepatitis B, also called hep B, is a virus that infects and affects the liver. When the hep B virus gets into the body it tries to set its home up in a person's liver and can cause serious liver damage. Our liver is an extremely important but often overlooked organ in our body with more than 500 different jobs.

The liver is a real powerhouse of an organ and essential to keeping us healthy so it’s important that we look after our livers. Many people aren't aware that hep B is a major public health issue in Australia.

Hepatitis NSW have designed online learning modules to be for everyone who is interested in the topics but they should be particularly relevant for people working with people affected by or at risk of hep B as well as those with advanced liver disease. This might include people who work in: Homelessness, Harm reduction, Alcohol and other drugs, The criminal justice sector, Immigration, Non-clinical health services, Mental health, Community health, Youth services, Allied health and Multicultural health.

The free online module takes approximately 45-60 minutes to complete. There’s a short evaluation survey at the end of each module as well as a form to complete in order to receive your certificate of completion.

Nitty Gritty Online Learning Module

Do you work in a role providing services for young people?

Would you like to enhance your skills to improve the sexual health outcomes of young people?

Participants will develop their knowledge of specific areas of sexual and reproductive health and build skills to confidently and appropriately support young clients.  The course has a focus on developing knowledge and strategies to work effectively with priority populations to support their needs.

This free course by Family Planning NSW has been designed to build on and complement Sticky Stuff training.

Topics in each module:

We encourage everyone to complete the Core Module first to understand some essential information about aspects of reproductive and sexual health relevant to young people.  Then go on to complete the course by working through the other modules to learn about supporting the reproductive and sexual health of particular groups of young people. 

Core Module - This module covers 4 topics: 

  • Communication about reproductive and sexual health and health literacy
  • Legal and social aspects of consent
  • Sexually Transmissible Infections
  • Contraception options and considerations

 Priority population modules:

  • Working with young lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, and asexual people
  • Working with young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Working with young people with disability
  • Working with young people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds

Sexual Assault in LGBTQ communities Online Learning Module

ACON Pride Training’s Sexual Assault in LGBTQ Communities eLearning is a quick and easy way to increase your knowledge, skills and confidence when working with LGBTQ people. This eLearning was co-designed with health and wellbeing service providers and LGBTQ community members affected by sexual assault. It will cover a range of areas to broadening your understanding of LGBTQ people and communities so that you can not only a better ally but also more inclusive in your work, services, and programs. These modules allow for access anytime and ability to start and stop as necessary. Video testimonials deliver personal stories and experiences directly from members of the community, helping to build your empathy and understanding as you compare them to your own lived experiences with gender, sexuality and bias.

Funding for this project came from NSW Government and is free to the first 4,000 participants.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the difference between gender and sexuality
  • Understand the health disparities affecting LGBTQ communities.
  • Appropriately respond to an LGBTQ person affected by sexual assault.
  • Reduce barriers for LGBTQ people accessing health services.
  • Confidently and effectively engage with people from LGBTQ communities.
  • Improve access to health services by creating an inclusive environment that supports LGBTQ communities.
